纪录片《空海传》是中国首部向世人全面展现遣唐高僧空海生平的影视作品。该片系悦野执导的首部长片作品，在有限预算下通过众筹独立制作而成。影片深入探寻空海精神和伟大贡献的文化根源，生动再现唐代中外文化交流的盛况。在大唐高度自信、开放包容的时代，一批批遣唐使与留学生跨越山海，将东方文明的火种带回故土。思想与信仰由此传播，推动社会前行。全片形式大胆创新、情感真挚恳切，旨在传递空海超越时空的崇高情怀——“清净居心、慈悲救世”。
KŪKAI is the first Chinese film to comprehensively present the life of the renowned Japanese Monk Kūkai. Directed by Yue Ye in her feature debut and realised through crowdfunding, the documentary traces the cultural roots of Kūkai’s legacy and recreates the vibrant exchange of civilisations that defined the Tang Dynasty — an era of remarkable confidence and openness, when envoys and students crossed vast seas to Tang China, returning with the seeds of Eastern civilisation, through which ideas and faith travelled and took root. Bold in form and deeply felt, the film aims to convey Kūkai’s transcendent ideals of “purity of heart” and “compassion for all beings,” values that reach across time and space.
空海（公元774-835年），谥号“弘法大师”，日本高僧、日本真言宗创始人、日本文化奠基人。公元804年，空海不畏艰险、渡海求法，跟随中国唐代佛教真言宗七祖惠果法师学习。学成归国后，空海铭记师父惠果“早归乡国，以奉国家，流布天下，增苍生福”的殷重嘱托，不仅将唐代真言密教传入日本，而且将唐代先进文化和生产技术引入日本，发展日本文字，创办平民教育，兴修水利工程，庄严国土、造福民众，在宗教、文学、书法、绘画、建筑、雕塑等诸多方面塑造日本文化，为推动日本古代社会发展、文化进步作出了杰出贡献，被誉为日本思想界、政治经济界、文化艺术界，乃至日常生活的伟大精神导师。

他尽己所能全面学习、系统吸收、广泛传播大唐文化，推动中华文化在日本落地生根、开花结果，在中华文化的海外传播、发展方面厥功至伟。
Kūkai (774–835 AD), posthumously honoured as Kōbō Daishi, was a revered Japanese monk, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, and a seminal figure in the formation of Japanese culture. In 804 AD, he undertook a perilous sea voyage to Tang China, where he studied under Master Huiguo, the seventh patriarch of Esoteric Buddhism (Tangmi). Upon completing his studies, Kūkai returned to Japan in accordance with his master’s final exhortation: “Hasten back to your homeland, offer the esoteric Dharma to the nation, spread the teachings widely, and cultivate the merits of living beings”.
He not only introduced Tang Esoteric Buddhism to Japan, but also transmitted the intellectual, artistic, and technological achievements of the Tang civilisation. Kūkai is credited with advancing the development of the Japanese writing system, promoting education for commoners, and undertaking water conservancy projects. His influence extended across religion, literature, calligraphy, painting, architecture and sculpture, leaving a profound and lasting imprint on Japanese society.
Kūkai stands as one of the most emblematic figures in the transmission of Tang culture beyond China’s borders. As a devoted inheritor, interpreter, and innovator of Chinese traditions abroad, he engaged in rigorous study, absorbed them with remarkable depth, and disseminated them widely. Through his efforts, key elements of Tang civilisation took root and flourished in Japan. His role in the cross-cultural transmission and continued development of Chinese civilisation remains both profound and enduring.
大唐文化作为古代中华文明的鼎盛时代，其影响力通过众多外国使者和学者的学习、吸收与传播，深刻影响了东亚乃至世界文明。这些文化传播者以非凡的勇气与智慧，跨越山海将大唐文明的火种带回故土，不仅重塑了本国的文化基因，而且共同编织了人类文明交流的壮丽图景。他们的故事，至今仍是全球化时代文明互鉴的动人传奇。日本高僧空海便是这些文化传播者最具代表性的人物之一。

As the apex of ancient Chinese civilisation, the culture of the Great Tang Dynasty exerted a profound influence across East Asia and beyond, largely through the devoted study, assimilation, and transmission undertaken by foreign envoys and scholars. With remarkable courage and wisdom, these cultural emissaries traversed vast seas and formidable landscapes to carry the intellectual and spiritual legacy of the Tang back to their homelands. In doing so, they not only reshaped the cultural foundations of their societies but also helped weave a rich and enduring tapestry of intercultural exchange. Their journeys stand as powerful testaments to mutual learning among civilisations—stories that continue to resonate in today’s interconnected world. Among these figures, Kūkai emerges as a singular and exemplary bridge between cultures.
Grounded in rigorous historical research and careful verification, this documentary seeks to reconstruct an authentic portrait of Kūkai, offering a deeper interpretation of his guiding ethos—“purity of heart,” “compassion for all beings,” “selflessness and altruism,” and “boundless vows and practice.” By bringing his legacy to a global audience, we hope to awaken within individuals a shared sense of clarity, kindness, and inner illumination.
